Second concussion for Edwards in NRL

Canberra Raiders Coach Ricky Stuart says the club’s medical staff will continue to monitor Joel Edwards after the second-rower suffered concussion for the second straight week.

Edwards collided with the shoulder of two-try debutant Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in the early minutes of Saturday night’s match at Penrith, won 12-6 by the Panthers in terrible weather conditions.

The forward was carried from the field on a stretcher.

“I spoke to him at halftime and he was actually pretty good, he had his memory and everything in regards to the game. He couldn’t recall the tackle, that’s all, which is quite common,” Stuart said.

“We’ll keep a check on him and do what we need to do in regards to the guidelines.

“Credit to (Panthers trainer) Ron Palmer and the Penrith staff and our staff how they handled the situation from a medical point of view.”

Canberra Captain and halfback Terry Campese was relieved.

“It’s never a good place to have someone in your team, especially a key defender, in a position like that, you always feel for them,” Campese said.

“It was good to come in at halftime (and see) he was actually throwing an apple around, so he wasn’t too concerned.”

Stuart was proud of his team’s commitment after losing Shannon Boyd and Jarrad Kennedy to a virus.

“Shannon has got a bad virus, he’s been bed-ridden for three days. Jarrad Kennedy, the same thing happened to him. He pulled out 30 minutes before the game,” Stuart said.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the (reaction to the) adversity that’s been thrown at these guys. From game one we had four away for our first five games.

“Last week we played with 15 men, 16 for 80 per cent of the game and 15 for 50 per cent. With those conditions (tonight) we played 16 men for 73 minutes.

“They’ve got a very proud coach. We’re really starting to build something here.”
