Sam Burgess to undergo shoulder scans

Concerned about his remaining time in the NRL, rugby union-bound Sam Burgess is to undergo scans on his right shoulder following an injury during South Sydney’s 34-18 romp over Canberra.

With just six weeks to play until the finals, a grim diagnosis could, at the very worst, spell the end of Burgess’s career at the Rabbitohs, as the 25-year-old is heading to Bath in England’s top rugby union competition at the season’s end.

The English international was seen icing his right shoulder after leaving the field at Canberra’s GIO Stadium in the second half on Monday’s game.

However, it’s understood he injured it 10 minutes before half time whilst trying to tackle Raiders prop Dane Tilse.

Burgess has a history of shoulder problems.

While it was his left shoulder that plagued him in 2010-11, he previously underwent a full reconstruction on his right shoulder during his time with Bradford in the English Super League.

Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire said the shoulder hadn’t been dislocated or subluxed this time round, and believed the scans were more precautionary.

However, he admitted the injury had Burgess worried.

“Sam is a bit concerned about it. Until you get the scans you won’t know exactly what it is,” Maguire said.

“Sam said it was sore internally. We’ll have to play it by ear.”

While the Rabbitohs jumped to second spot behind Manly with the win, Burgess’s shoulder problem was just one of several concerns to their title hopes encountered during the match.

Captain John Sutton will miss up to three weeks after suffering a medial ligament knee injury in the fifth minute, Kyle Turner (concussion) went off in the first half, and Ben Te’o was placed on report for a lifting tackle on Jarrod Croker in the 57th minute.

“The doctor said (the medial ligament) was very, very loose and if I kept going I could do my ACL,” Sutton said.

“Hopefully I’ll be back in a few weeks.”
