The Sydney Roosters are hopeful Shaun Kenny-Dowall will return to the football field this season despite the domestic violence allegations made against him.

Kenny-Dowall won’t play in the Roosters’ round-21 match against Canterbury on Friday, but he could make his return to the NRL the week after against Newcastle at Hunter Stadium on August 9.

Kenny-Dowall is understood to have been released from hospital after being admitted last week due to concerns about his mental welfare.

The Kiwi international sat out the Roosters’ win over the Warriors last Sunday after he was charged the day before with 10 offences in relation to his former girlfriend Jessica Peris.

He didn’t play in the Roosters’ win over Wests Tigers on Friday night either.

Teammate Jared Waerea-Hargreaves said the Kiwi international’s condition was improving.

“He is doing a lot better than a few days ago I guess,” said Waerea-Hargreaves, who is a close friend of Kenny-Dowall’s.

“We are supporting him 100 per cent. He has had some tough times there but he is getting back on track and we are all looking forward to having him back in the headquarters soon.

“I hope he will play again this year. I think he is getting in the right frame of mind and he needs the right support around him.

“I think he will be back.”

The Roosters and the NRL have not stood down Kenny-Dowall over the allegations asserting the 27-year old will be afforded the presumption of innocence.

The matter was heard in Waverley Local Court on Thursday, when Kenny-Dowall didn’t appear.

The matter has been adjourned until August 6.

Roosters captain Mitchell Pearce will become the youngest player to play his 200th first grade game in the match against the Dogs at Allianz Stadium.
