Queensland U20 rep in Kiwis squad

Eleven players yet to represent the Kiwis have been named in the first New Zealand train-on squad for the Four Nations rugby league tournament.

They include Cronulla outside back Valentine Holmes, an NRL rookie who played for Queensland under-20 this year.

Also in the list of 21 names from NRL clubs who failed to qualify for the play-offs is Warriors centre Konrad Hurrell, who represented Tonga in last year’s World Cup.

Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei, a veteran of 24 Tests, is included as well, after having missed this year’s Anzac clash.

However, there is no place for former Kiwis skipper Benji Marshall, who has shown good form for St George Illawarra since his return to the NRL after a short stint with Super Rugby side the Blues.

Two players involved in the Anzac Test have not been included because of injury.

Warriors utility Ben Henry has elected to have off-season knee surgery while Penrith five-eighth Isaac John has been sidelined since tearing an achilles tendon in May.

The Four Nations begins on October 25 with England playing Samoa and New Zealand facing Australia in a double-header in Brisbane.

Kiwis’ initial train-on squad: Gerard Beale (St George Illawarra), Adam Blair (Wests Tigers), Fa’amanu Brown (Cronulla), Sosaia Feki (Cronulla), David Fusitua (Warriors), Siliva Havili (Warriors), Valentine Holmes (Cronulla), Konrad Hurrell (Warriors), Shaun Johnson (Warriors), Ngani Laumape (Warriors), Thomas Leuluai (Warriors), Simon Mannering (Warriors), Suaia Matagi (Warriors), Ben Matulino (Warriors), Matt McIlrick (Canberra), Jason Nightingale (St George Illawarra), Sauaso Sue (Wests Tigers), Brad Takairangi (Wests Tigers), Martin Taupau (Wests Tigers), Bodene Thompson (Wests Tigers), Manu Vatuvei (Warriors).
