Queensland league mourning twin tragedies

Queensland’s rugby league community is in mourning after the sudden death of two bright young stars.

Mackay Cutters player Hayden Butler and North Queensland under-20s player Regan Grieve both passed away on Monday, leaving teammates, coaches, friends and family all over the state in shock.

Butler, 20, was a Melbourne Storm product who had moved to Mackay only three weeks ago to join the Intrust Super Cup club after spending last year with the Burleigh Bears.

Mackay Cutters executive officer Ross Aldridge said Butler was a “natural leader” who had made a immediate impact at the club in his short time there, and will be remembered for his “friendly nature and determined attitude”.

“This is an extremely difficult time for the Mackay Cutters as a club and also our players that formed a close bond with Hayden during his short time in Mackay,” Cutters executive officer Ross Aldridge said.

“He had many close friends at the club who had played with him throughout his junior career and were looking forward to playing alongside him again in 2015.

“While nothing prepares you for these situations the players and support staff are united in their wishes for Hayden’s family.”

Grieve was four days shy of his 19th birthday and, like Butler, the two-time Australian Schoolboys representative was tipped for big things.

The promising forward was the co-captain of the Queensland under-18s and previously represented his state also at under-16 level.

Playing groups from both clubs have been offered counselling by the NRL and QRL.

The Cutters and Cowboys were struck by a similar tragedy nearly two years ago with the passing of Alex Elisala, who played for both Mackay and North Queensland.
