NRL’s Fifita accused of threatening ref

NRL star Andrew Fifita has been accused of threatening a referee at a rugby league game in Sydney’s west.

Three officials had to restrain the Cronulla and State of Origin forward after he allegedly told the referee “I’ll smash you” after an incident involving his twin brother David, The Sunday Telegraph reports.

The paper says David Fifita was filling in as a trainer for a team taking part in a Penrith juniors A grade game in Glenwood on Saturday, when he abused the referee for not calling a halt for an injured player.

The 24-year-old referee, said to also be a police officer, began using his mobile phone to film the episode in case it was needed as judiciary evidence, when Andrew Fifita allegedly stepped inside a sideline rope and tried to grab it from him.

Cronulla chief executive Lyall Gorman is said to have informed the NRL’s integrity unit of the incident.
