NRL star Brett Stewart on DUI charge

Manly NRL star Brett Stewart has been charged with a low-range drink-driving offence after failing a random breath test on Sydney’s northern beaches on Monday morning.

Stewart was pulled over on Pittwater Rd at Warriewood at around 10am, and after failing a breath test, was taken to Mona Vale Police Station where he allegedly recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.079.

“I had a few drinks last night. I went home, went to bed and got up this morning. I thought I was fine and headed off for some breakfast. I got pulled over and I blew low range,” Stewart told News Corp as he left the police station.

“I’m really disappointed this has happened. I had no idea I was over the limit.

“There’s no way I would have got behind the wheel if I thought there was a problem.”

According to News Corp, Stewart was drinking with friends in Manly on Easter Sunday night and caught a cab home around 1am.

He will face Manly Local Court on May 7.

Stewart’s situation appears similar to that of Newcastle NRL star Willi Mason earlier this year.

Mason was caught drink-driving on his way to training the morning after taking part in Australia Day celebrations.

Mason was disqualified from driving for six months and fined $900 after being found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.09.

Manly have informed the NRL integrity unit of the Stewart incident.
