Movie buff Bennett ready for NRL GF

Brisbane prop Sam Thaiday expects Wayne Bennett to maintain his tradition of quoting hit movies to motivate his troops ahead of Sunday’s NRL grand final.

But Thaiday joked that Bennett’s material may be a little spicier than usual after casting a quick eye over the latest cinema guide.

“He likes to steal movie quotes,” Thaiday revealed.

“Whatever the movie is out at the moment.

“I am sure we will get an inspirational speech from ‘Straight Outta Compton’ or something.

“But the bottom line is he knows how to get the best out of someone.”

Instead of the controversial rap group NWA’s biopic, Bennett may be tempted to borrow a line from a Clint Eastwood film thanks to his likeness to the Hollywood star.

One wag even “mistook” him for Eastwood at an NRL game in Canberra in May, prompting a rare smile from the poker-faced Bennett on live TV.

Whatever he says will no doubt work judging by his 6-0 grand final record with Brisbane.

Thaiday joked Bennett’s next book – complete no doubt with movie quotes – would reveal the secret to his success.

A head coach with almost 30 years of experience, Bennett is eyeing premiership No.8 on Sunday.

“He’s got a book he will sell when he retires,” 30-year-old, 13-season veteran Thaiday laughed.

“Look, I don’t know, he just seems to have the answers to all the questions.

“It comes from years and years of experience.

“He’s a very educated man in that he sources ideas from different sports all over the world.”

Thaiday will also be looking to regain his Midas touch, nine years after celebrating Brisbane’s last title back in 2006.

Thaiday, Corey Parker, retiring skipper Justin Hodges and Darius Boyd are the sole survivors from their 2006 grand final triumph over Melbourne.

“It’s something I haven’t been a part of in a long time,” Thaiday said of the grand final.

“It makes me feel a little bit old.

“It’s been a long time coming.

“It just shows how hard it is to get into a grand final.

“We have had teams here in the past to make and win grand finals but haven’t executed at the right time of year.

“We have done that this year.”

Broncos assistant Kevin Walters said the next challenge was getting their heads around the game ahead.

“Grand final week can consume you in many ways,” the five time premiership winning ex-Broncos half told Sky Sports radio.

“You’ve got to get it right. But the good thing about the club is that we have some great experience amongst the staff.”

A Bennett movie quote could also help – “make my day”, perhaps.
