Morgan happy to stay Cowboys’ No.1

Michael Morgan is in no rush to give up his No.1 jersey at North Queensland despite his starring cameo in the halves against St George Illawarra on Saturday.

With Johnathan Thurston on State of Origin duties and Ray Thompson still injured, Morgan was paired with five-eighth Robert Lui in the 27-24 loss at Jubilee Oval.

It was the first time the 22-year-old has played at halfback this year, having been called in to replace the injured Lachlan Coote as the Cowboys’ custodian.

But Morgan slid back into the playmaking role with ease and even helped set up Antonio Winterstein’s second try of the night.

“I was happy with parts of (my performance),” told AAP.

“It was the first time I’d been there (at halfback) in a while.”

Asked which position he’d rather play, Morgan said he wasn’t too sure.

“I’ve really been enjoying fullback this year,” he added.

“It’s been a good opportunity for me and I’m happy I’ve made the most of it.

“Obviously there’s some depth in the halves anyway, with JT – when he comes back – and Robbie (Lui) and Ray (Thompson). So I’m happy at fullback.”

Morgan was left frustrated with his side’s inconsistency, particularly letting Jason Nightingale slip through for a late match-winning try.

“There were periods there where we played good footy, it’s just about pulling that together for 80 minutes,” he said.

The Cowboys, who are yet to win away this season, don’t host another match until round 21.

“We’ve got the bye this week, so that’ll be good – a (chance to) freshen up physically and mentally,” Morgan said.

“And after that we get a couple of players back from injury, I think.

“So if there’s a time to win a away, it’s coming up in the next few weeks.”
