Money not everything for Souths’ Reynolds

Money isn’t everything for South Sydney halfback Adam Reynolds, who admits his partnership with Luke Keary was a key factor in staying at the NRL club instead of securing a better deal.

The young halves paring both re-signed in January with the reigning premiers, who kick off their title defence away to the Brisbane Broncos on Thursday.

Reynolds, 24, is committed until the end of the 2017 season, while 23-year-old Keary has re-signed until the end of 2016.

There’s been speculation Reynolds could have landed a more lucrative deal elsewhere if he’d shopped around but he says that wasn’t a concern.

“No not at all. I’m happy here at the moment at Souths and couldn’t ask to be around a better bunch of blokes,” he said ahead of training on Monday.

“It’s definitely got a lot to do with being happy. I’ve got a young family that’s growing up in the area. My eldest daughter has started school so it was pretty easy for me to make my decision.”

Reynolds admitted he had been in constant communication with Keary during contract negotiations and said sticking together played a key role.

“There was a few niggles between me and Luke urging each other to stay on,” he said.

“I like playing alongside Luke. He’s a great competitor and has a good head on his shoulders.”

With Sam Burgess and Ben Te’o departing Redfern at the end of last season, the Rabbitohs will field a slightly different side for the season-opener against the Broncos.

Glenn Stewart showed just what he will bring to club during an impressive Souths debut at the World Club Challenge.

Reynolds said Stewart was a great recruit for the side.

“He’s been unreal for the club. He’s added something a bit different,” Reynolds said of the former Manly star.

“He’s going about his footy the right way and he’s definitely lost a few kilos over the pre-season – he’s really enjoying himself here.”

The Rabbitohs have shown the loss of Burgess may not slow them down, going on to win the Auckland Nines and the World Club Challenge.

Souths forward Jason Clark says the club isn’t getting ahead of themselves and are beginning the season just like any other.

“It’s not too different to any other year,” he said.

“It’s all behind us now and we’ve had our big pre-season and it’s all about round one now. That’s our main focus.”
