Milford gets Aust train-on squad call

Brisbane-bound playmaker Anthony Milford is in contention for a Kangaroos call-up after being named in the Australian rugby league train-on squad.

The Canberra utility was one of four players, alongside Canberra teammates Jack Wighton, Jarrod Croker and Cronulla’s Michael Gordon, without high level representative experience included among the initial 21 chosen by Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens after their club teams failed to reach the NRL finals.

The train-on squad is for both the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII match against Papua New Guinea in October and November’s Four Nations tournament involving Australia, New Zealand, England and Samoa.

The Kangaroos squad for the Four Nations will be named after the PM’s XIII clash in Koroko, on October 12.

Milford, who has consistently been one of the Raiders best this season, will head to the Broncos ahead of 2015.

He has represented Samoa in four Tests and Queensland at under age level.

He was part of the Maroons squad for State of Origin II this year, but did not play.

Newcastle veterans Willie Mason and Kurt Gidley are also a chance of a return to representative football after making the squad.

Sharks prop Andrew Fifita could also stage a comeback to Test football, after missing out on Kangaroos and NSW selection this season.

Each week players will be added to the squad as teams fall out of the NRL finals race.

The Prime Minister’s XIII will play the PNG Kumuls at Kokopo on Sunday, October 12.

The Kangaroos Four Nations campaign opens on October 25 against New Zealand in Brisbane.

The full train-on squad announced is: Brett Morris, Josh Dugan, Trent Merrin, Jarryd Hayne, Will Hopoate, Beau Scott, Kurt Gidley, Willie Mason, Anthony Milford, Jack Wighton, Jarrod Croker, Josh Papalii, Andrew Fifita, Luke Lewis, Michael Gordon, Aaron Woods, Robbie Farah, Aidan Sezer, Dave Taylor, Greg Bird, Jacob Lillyman.
