Michael Klinger ready to fire for WA

Veteran batsman Michael Klinger will get an early chance to show the Redbacks what they’re missing out on after being named in Western Australia’s squad for the upcoming one-day Cup.

Klinger was in some doubt for the tournament after breaking his arm while playing for English county side Gloucestershire in August.

However, he has since recovered from the injury and was included in WA’s 15-man squad on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old was the fourth top scorer at last year’s One-Day Cup, posting 380 runs for South Australia at an average of 76.

Klinger still had one year remaining on his Redbacks contract.

But with his future beyond that up in the air, Klinger made the switch to WA at the end of last summer on a two-year deal.

Klinger’s presence will be vital in a Warriors line-up missing noted batsmen Shaun Marsh (elbow), Marcus North (retired), Simon Katich (retired) and Mitch Marsh (international duties).

And if everything goes to plan, his first official match for the Warriors will be against his former side, with WA taking on South Australia at the Gabba on October 8.

Big-hitting Perth Scorchers opener Craig Simmons will also bolster WA’s squad, with the Warriors confident they can improve on last year’s fifth-placed finish.

Simmons’ inclusion comes following his Big Bash League heroics with the Scorchers, where he scored 278 runs at an average of 39.71, including two centuries.

WA squad: Adam Voges (capt), Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Michael Beer, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Marcus Harris, Michael Klinger, Simon Mackin, Joel Paris, Nathan Rimmington, Craig Simmons, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye, Sam Whiteman.
