Mata’utia given Test debut masterclass

History-making Kangaroos winger Sione Mata’utia may have opened his rugby league Test career with a win but he was also given a masterclass by giant England flyer Ryan Hall.

Mata’utia eclipsed Israel Folau as the youngest Australian rugby league Test debutant, aged just 18 years and 129 days as he lined up in the Four Nations match at AAMI Park.

The Kangaroos came from behind to steal the win 16-12 and keep their title hopes alive.

Hall almost saved the game for England in the final minute when he dived over the top of Australian fullback Greg Inglis and got a finger to the ball but video referee Bernard Sutton ruled there was no downward pressure.

While Australia got the victory, Mata’utia, who has only played seven NRL games for Newcastle, may have nightmares about hulking blond marauder Hall.

The 26-year-old weighs 10 kilograms more than the youngster and showed he had pace to match his power.

He was dominant in the first half and helped set up the first try in the 29th minute when he ran on to a ball from fullback Sam Tomkins and raced 40 metres down-field.

Hall offloaded to Daryl Clark, and Inglis was penalised for dragging him into touch.

England scored through Kallum Watkins in the ensuing play.

Minutes later Hall got a try of his own as England centre Dan Sarginson drew Mata’utia off his wing and then got a flick pass away to Hall.

Mata’utia could be in some doubt for Australia’s last match, against Samoa in England next Sunday after finishing the match with a calf injury.
