SEA EAGLES
The Sea Eagles suffered their biggest loss of the season when defeated 30 – 10 by the Broncos last Sunday at Suncorp.

The Sea Eagles welcomed back both Kieran Foran and Jamie Lyon from injury but were without half-back Daley Cherry-Evans and Forward Anthony Watmough who both succumbed to injuries sustained in the Game I of the State Of Origin.

The Sea Eagles were on the back foot early and after only sixteen minutes, found themselves behind 14 nil and under pressure to produce points from the start, highlighted Cherry-Evans absence.

Cherry-Evans and Watmough, have been named in the side for this week’s clash.

Only a last minute field goal against the struggling Newcastle has prevented the Sea Eagles from losing their last three matches.

It was this time last year that the Sea Eagles find themselves in a mid-season slump, where from six games, they won one.

They’ve only loss consecutive matches once since then and will be keen to remedy last week’s performance back at home against the current competition leaders.

BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs produced a spirited performance minus their Origin stars when facing the Roosters in round 11 despite the score-line reading 32 – 12 against them.

At half-time, the Bulldogs who were without regular halves pairing (Hodkinson and Reynolds) along with strike centre Josh Morris, were within two points of their opponents (8 – 10) and it was only three tries to the Roosters inside of the last fifteen minutes, that blew the score-line out.

It was their first loss since Penrith defeated them in Round 3 but with the bye last week, and back to a full roster for this game, the Bulldogs will be looking to jump straight back into the winner’s stall.

The Origin victory will be an enormous boost to the Canterbury halves who will be unfazed at Brookvale after facing the wrath of a Queensland crowd.

It could be the catalyst for both players to take their respective games to a higher level again and with the Canterbury already in good form and leading the comp, that spells danger to opposing sides.

HEAD TO HEAD
Manly has lost three of their last four matches against the Bulldogs and both games that were played at Brookvale during that time by margins of eight, and two points.

Only one of the last five matches has been decided by a margin of greater than ten points and from the same five matches, only once has the total match score exceeded 32 points.

With Manly stinging from their loss and with Canterbury only scoring more than 21 points once in their last seven games (against the struggling Dragons), there’s no reason to think that this won’t be another game to follow the recent pattern.

News :

The closest Michael Morgan thought he would get to a State of Origin experience this year was rubbing shoulders with North Queensland teammate – and Maroons pivot – Johnathan Thurston at their NRL club.

Yet Cowboys No.1 Morgan, 22, suddenly finds himself in the mix for a bench utility spot for an injury-hit Queensland ahead of this month’s must-win Origin II clash against NSW in Sydney.

And his stocks will only improve further if he passes Origin’s toughest test – Parramatta fullback Jarryd Hayne.

Morgan admitted he was embarrassed to be named this week as a dark horse to fill the Maroons utility vacancy ahead of Friday night’s clash with the Eels at Pirtek Stadium.

“I don’t know how to put this. I am definitely proud that my name has been put out there and I would love to play Origin,” he told AAP.

“But I would have thought a few other players would be ahead of me.

“Let’s just say I was not expecting to play Origin at the start of the season.”

Morgan is in the Origin bench spot mix along with Canberra’s Anthony Milford and Brisbane halfback Ben Hunt.

Manly’s Daly Cherry-Evans has created the vacancy after slotting in for injured Maroons halfback Cooper Cronk (broken arm).

But even Cherry-Evans may be touch-and-go for Origin II due to hip and knee complaints, creating more potential headaches for Maroons selectors.

Either way, the stage is set for the ultimate Origin trial for Morgan as he lines up against the man of the match in Origin I, Eels fullback Hayne.

Cowboys coach Paul Green would not have helped his nerves.

“He can do just about anything. He can run, pass, kick. You are not sure exactly what is coming at you and he is a physical guy – he ticks all the boxes,” Green gushed.

Then again Morgan has already stepped out of the shadow of another legendary fullback to be considered for Origin.

Townsville-bred Morgan had only trained in the Cowboys halves since his 2010 NRL debut.

Yet he was Green’s first choice as replacement No.1 when the man expected to replace club legend Matt Bowen at fullback, Lachlan Coote, suffered a year-ending knee injury in the pre-season.

“Matt was a freak, a legend,” Morgan said.

“And it was devastating what happened to Lachlan.

“I have just been trying to do my best since.”
