Luke allowed to join Souths’ GF party

Suspended South Sydney hooker Issac Luke will be allowed to join his teammates on the ground at ANZ Stadium after Sunday’s NRL grand final, win or lose.

Luke has been banned from the showpiece against Canterbury after being found guilty of a dangerous throw on Sydney Roosters star Sonny Bill Williams in last week’s preliminary final.

The NRL’s operations guidelines prevent any suspended player from entering the field of play before, during or after a match.

But head of football Todd Greenberg said on Thursday that won’t apply to Luke.

“I’ve spent the last couple of days talking to the Rabbitohs and we’ve agreed that absolutely there should be some common sense or discretion,” he told Triple M’s Grill Team.

“Issac will be permitted on the ground after the game.

“He’ll certainly be part of the commiserations or the celebrations.

“He’ll be in all the team photos; he’ll do the lap of honour.”

However, he won’t be entitled to collect a premiership ring.

“Because there are only 17 of those, which are for the players that played,” Greenberg added.

“If the Rabbitohs want to do something separate to that, that’s entirely up to them.

“But we’re certainly not in the business of trying to stop him from enjoying the post-match.”

Greenberg praised Luke for his behaviour at the judiciary on Tuesday night, having shook the hand of every panel member despite the verdict, and said the decision to allow him onto the field was acknowledgement of that.

“The way he handled himself was absolutely first-class and the way we’re handling this is in direct reference to the way he’s handled himself. And I think that’s fair,” he said.
