Koroisau departs Souths on a high

South Sydney’s other departing grand final hero Api Koroisau has paid tribute to Issac Luke and admitted he went into the Sunday’s NRL decider with mixed emotions after replacing the suspended hooker.

The Penrith-bound rake was hailed by coach Michael Maguire in his final appearance in Souths colours having set up the move that led to George Burgess’ crucial go-ahead try in the 57th minute after Canterbury had levelled at 6-6.

An ankle injury had kept Koroisau sidelined for eight weeks but he got the unexpected opportunity to play in the biggest game of his life when the NRL judiciary suspended Luke for a lifting tackle on Sonny Bill Williams.

The 21-year-old took his chance with both hands, helping the Rabbitohs to a 30-6 win, despite admitting he felt he was going to collapse after a breathless opening 10 minutes.

“My lungs were burning I can tell you that, but the adrenaline got me through,” Koroisau said.

“It’s been about two months since I last played. I have been training hard but match fitness is entirely different.

“But I got my second wind out there and I was just floating.”

Luke and Koroisau have developed a close bond formed as the youngster came through the club’s junior ranks.

But despite the Kiwi international’s bitter disappointment at missing the club’s first grand final in 43 years, he was on hand to mentor Koroisau in the lead up to the game.

“Issac is the reason why I am here,” he said.

“I played half the season when he was injured and he told me to keep believing in myself and stick to the process.

“I was more gutted for Issac than pleased that I was playing. He has been here for seven years.

“He’s been a posterboy for the South Sydney Rabbitohs and worked his butt off to be here.

“All I wanted to do was do my best for the team and win a premiership that he could celebrate.”

Luke was full of praise for the way his young apprentice fared on the big stage and said he will miss him greatly when he moves on.

“He’s a great player and I’m sad that he’s going to Penrith,” Luke said.

“I love Api, he’s like my little brother.”
