Kite to retire at the end of NRL season

Veteran Penrith prop Brent Kite has announced he will retire at the end of the NRL season.

The 34-year-old, who is in his 14th campaign at the top level, told Fairfax Media this would be his last year of rugby league.

Kite, who is the longest-serving player currently in the NRL with 308 games, played 10 State of Origins for NSW and five Tests for Australia.

“I’m going to finish off this year,” said Kite, who joined the Panthers from Manly last year.

“I’m not keen to do any more pre-seasons. I think it was the start of the 2013 season, I was already counting it down. That was my last year at Manly. I remember saying to one of the guys ‘Is it too early to be counting down to the end of my career?’.”

The Queanbeyan-born Kite made his NRL debut for St George Illawarra in 2002 before joining Manly where he spent nine seasons, winning two premierships and being awarded the Clive Churchill Medal after the Sea Eagles’ victory over Melbourne in 2008.
