Kennedy felt like he never left Roosters

Martin Kennedy reckons it feels like he never left the Sydney Roosters.

Critics in Brisbane could argue his NRL form never did either.

But Kennedy, 25, is confident he can rebound from a horror Broncos stint and reclaim a tri-colours pack berth in 2015.

The hulking prop may be a Queenslander despite spending five years at the Roosters until 2013.

However, the ex-Maroons State of Origin 18th man never looked at home in the first year of his $400,000-a-season deal in Brisbane, making the starting side just four times in 2014.

But after pulling on the Roosters colours again at 2015 pre-season training, Kennedy said he was back with family again – literally.

His younger brother Sam is the Roosters Under-20s strength and conditioning coach.

Asked if he felt like he had never left the Roosters, Kennedy said: “I guess so.

“It was a pretty easy decision to come back to the club.

“Emotionally I feel like I never left the club entirely because I had so many mates down here and had such a long association with the club.

“I always felt that I was tied to the Roosters.”

Kennedy still has some ties with Brisbane – financial ones.

The Broncos will have to pay out a portion of the final two years of Kennedy’s contract, ensuring he is a bargain buy for the Roosters.

The arrival of returning Broncos coach Wayne Bennett ensured an abrupt departure for Kennedy as they cleared cap space for Darius Boyd.

“It was obviously a mixed year up there,” Kennedy told Roosters TV.

“I probably didn’t settle in as well as I should have.

“I guess everything happens for a reason.

“I’m forever grateful to have a few more extra years down here now.

“The place has an aura about it, being successful as they have been.”

The transition from being the Broncos’ second-highest paid forward to just another Roosters prop will be difficult, Kennedy admits.

“There’s going to be some massive hurdles to get myself over,” he said.

“There’s so many young blokes coming through the ranks and the boys certainly haven’t dropped off their form.

“But it’s something I am definitely ready for.”

Kennedy – a former Australian PM’s XIII rep who has played 82 NRL games – hoped Roosters coach Trent Robinson would bring out the best in him again.

“It’s a massive deal, playing under him means everything,” he said.
