According to Wayne Bennett, there will be no selection headache when Darius Boyd returns from injury.
But it seems he hasn’t told stand-in fullback Jordan Kahu.
Twelve months ago, Kahu had his eyes on the Broncos No.6 jersey.
Fast forward 12 months and the would-be pivot looks right at home wearing No.1 after starring in Brisbane’s 44-22 NRL win over North Queensland at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.
Now finally appearing safe under the high ball, Kahu showed what he can do in attack by setting up a Lachlan Maranta first half try-scoring double with superb hands.
It was part of a scoring blitz in which the Broncos piled on four tries in the final 13 minutes of the first half to lead 32-6 at the break.
Kahu was initially being groomed as Brisbane’s next pivot 12 months ago before his bad luck with injury kicked in again.
He had suffered two season-ending knee injuries in back-to-back pre-seasons before being injured in the 2014 trials.
Instead, Kahu has become Brisbane’s fifth fullback since 2013 after prized recruit Boyd ruptured his Achilles.
Kahu plans to make up for lost time in the absence of Boyd who is expected to return mid-season.
“He (Bennett) hasn’t said anything at the moment (about his future) – I have got the jersey at the moment and I want to put my best foot forward,” Kahu said.
Bennett claimed Kahu was “getting better” in the custodian role.
But asked if there would be a selection headache upon Boyd’s return, Bennett: “No, there will be no selection headache.”
However, Bennett admitted it was hard to gauge his team’s form so early in the season despite the eight tries to four romp.
“I don’t think the Cowboys kind of turned up tonight,” Bennett said.
Broncos captain Justin Hodges liked what he saw from budding halves Ben Hunt and recruit Anthony Milford.
“We built pressure for the first time and our halves really stood up and took control for the first time,” he said.
Brisbane’s bench also responded after Josh McGuire (concussion) was lost midway through the first half and the likes of Hodges were rested in the final stages.
Meanwhile, Cowboys prop Matt Scott was put on report for a 72nd minute high shot on Adam Blair.
