Jennings revels in dream NRL debut

George Jennings is hopeful his try-scoring debut for Penrith against Canterbury can earn him an extended run in the side and the chance to face older brother Michael later this month.

George touched down in the first half of Sunday’s 24-18 win over the Bulldogs having been given his chance on the left wing by coach Ivan Cleary while Josh Mansour recovers from off-season shoulder surgery.

Kangaroos winger Mansour is expected to be back in action by round four – the week after the Panthers face Michael Jennings and the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium.

George is five years younger than the NSW and Kangaroos Test centre and the pair have never faced one another in a competitive match.

The 21-year-old said it would be a huge occasion for the family should it come to fruition and although he looks up to his elder sibling doesn’t want to be compared to him.

“There’s a lot of expectation being his little brother but he’s been really good with that and never puts pressure on me or our younger brother Robert,” Jennings said.

“I didn’t hear from him before the game as he was coming back from Townsville, but whenever we play he doesn’t really get in contact.

“There’s already a lot of pressure on us and he doesn’t want to tell us what to do or not to do, he just wants us to be ourselves.

“We play the Roosters in round three I just hope I can stay in first grade and get the chance to play against him.”

Jennings had to find 30 tickets for his extended family and friends to watch his debut and said scoring his first ever NRL try following a sublime cut-out pass from Jamie Soward was a feeling he’ll never forget.

“To play in front of my family and have them all come out here was an awesome feeling,” he said.

“‘Sowie’ practices those passes all the time in training and I just had to make sure I was alert enough to be on the end of that one.

“Every day I am pushing to cement a spot in first grade. It’s going to be tough but if I can play good footy then hopefully I can stay there.”
