I might not keep premiership ring: Luke

Suspended South Sydney hooker Issac Luke isn’t sure whether he will keep his NRL premiership ring.

Coach Michael Maguire presented Luke with the ring in an emotional aftermath to the Rabbitohs’ 30-6 grand final win over Canterbury on Sunday.

Luke missed the game due to a dangerous throw ban.

He was also presented with a ring by Souths co-owner Russell Crowe that the Hollywood star had specially made for the livewire rake.

Maguire’s gesture replicated Johnathan Thurston’s 2004 efforts when the Canterbury interchange playmaker gave his ring to injured Bulldogs skipper Steve Price after the win over the Sydney Roosters.

Price has that ring to this day, but Luke isn’t sure if it will be his forever.

“It was a great gesture from ‘Madge’ (Maguire) but I’m not sure if I will keep it,” Luke said.

“Madge has been a great help to me all along and to all of us.

“Once I was suspended the week wasn’t about me, it was about the team, that is something that Madge drives and that is how I wanted it to be.

“As hard as it was watching the games the boys stuck to it and got through it in the end.

“It was a team effort all year and I’m so happy to be part of that.”

Luke admitted to mixed feelings in the toughest week of his seven-year 168 game NRL career.

“I am happy for all the boys, that it has all happened like this, that’s just the way it is,” Luke said.

“I had a lot of emotions, it is not every day that you get rubbed out of a grand final.

“It has been a tough week, I had to really control myself around the boys, but they really helped me out.”
