Hardaker wants end to uncertainty

The English rugby league player at the centre of an investigation into alleged homophobic comments made during matches this season has called for an end to the uncertainty over his immediate future for the sake of his family.

The 22-year-old Leeds fullback Zak Hardaker, who was on Monday named in the 2014 Super League Dream Team, is currently being investigated for an alleged homophobic comment during a match against St Helens.

The England international, who served a five-match ban in the summer after being found guilty of directing homophobic comments at referee James Child, has yet to be notified if he faces another charge, 17 days after the offence is alleged to have taken place.

If Hardaker is charged and found guilty, he could be given as much as an eight-match ban, which would rule him of England’s Four Nations campaign.

Leeds have stood by their player, accusing the Rugby Football League of a “witchhunt” in their pursuit of the case, and Hardaker says the whole episode is having a detrimental affect on his family.

“I’ve not got a clue what is happening,” Hardaker said at the unveiling of the Dream Team at St Helens.

“I was investigated last week and that’s about as much as I’ve heard.

“Personally, I don’t think they’ve got enough evidence to do it because, if they did, they would have got me two or three weeks ago, wouldn’t they?

“I would rather they just come out and say ‘come to Red Hall, we’ve got this, this and this’, and try and charge me or say they haven’t got enough evidence because it’s hanging over me, it’s hanging over the club and, most importantly, it’s hanging over my family which pisses me off more than anything.

“I can deal with people giving me a load of jip – when I played at Wigan I got booed every time I touched the ball and that didn’t bother me too much.

“But my mum’s not that keen on it. I would just rather it be sorted and be over and done with because it’s no good for anyone.”

A RFL spokesman declined to comment because the investigation is continuing.
