Gutherson the Sea Eagles’ next flyer

Superstar fullback Brett Stewart says rookie Manly winger Clinton Gutherson is set for a big NRL future, he just might have to bide his team before it comes.

The 19-year-old has scored two tries in his two NRL games and again impressed in Manly’s round 17 loss to Canterbury on Friday.

Former Australian Schoolboy Gutherson was dangerous in attack and composed in defence, especially under the high ball, in his second match after debuting in the final round loss to Penrith last season.

Gutherson is a good chance of playing again in Manly’s round 18 clash with Wests Tigers at Brookvale Oval with Jorge Taufua in considerable doubt with an ankle injury.

ButManly has arguably the best backline in the NRL and, given the depth at the Sea Eagles, Gutherson may have to wait a while to cement a first grade spot but his teammates have no doubt he will.

“I rate Gutho very highly,” Stewart said.

“I think he is just a natural footballer and there was evidence of that on Friday night with a couple of touches that he had. He has real footy smarts about him.

“He has a really cool head that is pretty obvious as well.”

Manly captain Jamie Lyon agrees.

“Clinton has got a big future, he had a pretty strong game for us last week,” he said.

“He does some good things for us and I’m sure he is only going to get better.

“We have a bit of depth there in the outside backs so it is definitely good for the club and good for Clinton as well, he put his hand up to play a good game last week.”

Steve Matai is another impressed by the youngster.

“He is only getting better and I’m sure he is a definite star of the future,” he said.
