Guerra to stay at Roosters

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has guaranteed out-of-sorts representative back-rower Aidan Guerra his NRL future lies with the Tricolours.

Guerra is off contract at Bondi at the end of 2017 but there has been talk the Queensland forward could exit Bondi at season’s end after an indifferent year.

However the 28-year-old said Robinson has told him he won’t be going anywhere.

Guerra enjoyed a successful comeback from reserves to the NRL in the Roosters’ 42-6 thumping of St George Illawarra on Sunday.

“There have been a few rumours going around but I have been told by Trent and the club they have confidence in me and that I am here to stay,” Guerra told AAP.

“I’m under no illusion though. One game back doesn’t mean I am back to form but it certainly means I know I still have the ability.

“Getting dropped always hurts whether you know you deserve it or not. But I felt that I deserved to be dropped and it was up to me if I got that reprieve to make the most of it and show I deserved to be out there.

“It has been a pretty emotional couple of weeks.”

Guerra played in all three State of Origin games for Queensland this year, but has struggled through much of the NRL season.

“It has been hard. I have been trying to put my finger on it for 24 rounds. Some games have been good, but too many haven’t,” he said.

“But there was no other way for me to react to the sacking other than to put my head down and train hard. You don’t get a positive outcome if you act negatively about it.

“I know what I am capable of and so does Trent.

“Hopefully I can instill that confidence that I can do it week-in week-out even if there is just two games to go in the season.”

Guerra said he was hoping to finish the season on a positive note to set up a better 2017.

“It hasn’t been the season we want as a side and it definitely hasn’t been the season I have wanted individually,” he said.

“But we have stuck together and taken some lessons from it that should help us moving forward.”
