Gold Coast Titans vs Manly Sea Eagles 2014 NRL Round 23 preview, tips and teams

TITANS
Try as the Titans may, they were unable to send John Cartwright out as a winning coach last week, losing to the Sydney Roosters 26 – 18.

It was their third loss in a row since their last and unexpected win over the Knights in round 19.

Former Cowboys Coach Neil Henry will now take over the Gold Coast team and he is sticking with the same side that produced a competitive, if scrappy, performance on Monday night.

The Titans remarkably have lost their last seven straight games at home and have lost two of their last three against the Sea Eagles at this venue as well.

It’s hard to imagine that the Titans were top of the ladder after eight rounds and registered defeats over the likes of Brisbane, North Queensland and Melbourne however, a string of injuries and losing key players to Origin has seen their season turn into one of their worst on record.

This is the second to last home game for the Titans, so let’s hope for the sake of their suffering fans, that as they did Monday night just gone, they at least give this one a shake.

SEA EAGLES
The competition leaders suffered their first loss in five weeks when defeated by the Rabbitohs last week, 23 – 4, recording their fifth away loss from nine games this year.

The Sea Eagles scored first but losing centre Steve Matai in the first half was a big blow. Matai has been the focal point of the majority of Manly’s attack this year and without him leading the charge, they couldn’t penetrate a solid Rabbitohs defence who were able to keep Manly to less then ten points for only the second occasion this year.

Matai has been named for this clash though and he completes a strong looking Sea Eagles outfit.

HEAD TO HEAD.
These two clubs have taken it in turns of winning over the past four seasons and if that trend continues here, it’ll be the Titans scoring a rare and unexpected win at home.

As mentioned above, the Sea Eagles haven’t been as potent on the road as they have been at home but if there’s any ground this season that doesn’t hold fears for the visitors, it’s this venue where the Titans are 2 – 8.

A new coach and one of the last home-games should see the Titans at least come out swinging but still to hard to see them land enough blows to defeat the minor premiership favourites.
