Star Newcastle centre Dane Gagai will not follow coach Wayne Bennett to Brisbane next NRL season, the Knights confirmed on Tuesday.

The former Bronco had been linked to a return to the club that sacked him in 2012 after a series of discipline breaches.

But Bennett said Gagai, 22, would honour his contract at the Knights, which concludes at the end of the 2015 season.

“This story about Dane wanting to leave is incorrect and is driven solely by the media,” Bennett said.

“Dane is happy at the Knights and will be playing here next season.”

“It is disappointing for the club, for Dane and for the supporters and, hopefully, this sets the record straight.”
