Ferguson is Origin ready says Jennings

Blake Ferguson is primed for a return to the State of Origin arena just three matches into his NRL comeback, NSW and Australian centre Michael Jennings believes.

Jennings has had an intimate view of Ferguson’s development in his return to rugby league this year and says his Sydney Roosters teammate is fast returning to the form that vaulted him into the Blues side in 2013, just prior to his self-inflicted 22-month NRL exile.

Ferguson enjoyed his most impressive performance in 2015 in the Roosters’ win over Penrith on Monday, scoring two tries in a compelling head-to-head duel with fellow Blues hopeful Jamal Idris.

Ferguson enjoyed a points victory over Idris, an indication Jennings said, that his form warrants Blues selection.

“If you are picking on form I think Fergo has to fit into the (NSW) backline there somewhere,” Jennings told AAP.

“He is going really well. He is playing a consistent game in defence and attack, which I don’t think he has done before.

“He’s been showing what he is capable of at training throughout the pre-season, it is nothing new to us and it is good to see him do it on the paddock.

“Hopefully he can keep that consistency up.

“It is early but he is showing the form to be there in the Blues side.”

Jennings, who will be one of the first players picked by coach Laurie Daley when he sits down to select his team ahead of Origin I in Sydney on May 27, says Ferguson has helped to make him a better player.

“Fergo has been great for me,” the 2013 premiership winner said.

“He has been really competitive, it has bettered me as a player defending up against him because he is so dynamic that you always have to be on your toes, he is so good and it always makes training very challenging.

“It’s had a massive impact on bettering my game.

“It’s good that he had Idris the other night, he loves a challenge and when he rises to that challenge he will get over anyone.”
