Cronk ‘in doubt’ after Qld training injury

Queensland coach Kevin Walters says Cooper Cronk is in doubt for the State of Origin series opener after rolling his ankle at training.

The halfback went down early with the complaint on Friday, and at first did not appear troubled by it during the session on the Gold Coast, but he later called for medical assistance.

“He’s in doubt,” Walters said.

“His ankle swelled up like a balloon.

“We will get some scans as soon as we can and go from there.

“It is disappointing for Cooper. You want these things to go as smoothly as possible but we will get on with it.”

Cronk’s injury capped a disruptive day for the Maroons.

Manly’s Daly Cherry-Evans and Brenton Lawrence had been invited along with a number of fringe players to take part in Friday’s opposed session but could not attend after their Sydney flights were grounded by strong winds.

Cherry-Evans was initially due to only attend Friday’s session before returning to Sydney.

But due to Cronk’s injury, Cherry-Evans will attend Maroons camp on Saturday and remain on standby as the Maroons sweat on scan results.

“We will give Cooper every chance to prove his fitness – he’s a good healer,” Walters said.
