The famous Bowen name looks set to return to the North Queensland side next NRL season, but it’s the younger, bigger version who is ready to make his mark.

Matt Bowen is enjoying his twilight years in the English Super League, but nephew Javid has made an early case for a first grade debut on the wing for the Cowboys in 2015.

The 21-year-old Bowen scored a brilliant hat-trick in the inaugural State Championship grand final win for the Northern Pride on Sunday, earning him man-of-the-match honours.

Bowen starred in the Cowboys’ Auckland Nines title triumph early this year and is signed on with the NRL squad for the next two seasons.

According to Pride coach Jason Demetriou and teammates, it’s only a matter of time until Bowen makes the next step.

Matt Bowen had an uncanny ability to make something out of nothing in his 270 matches at fullback for the Cowboys, and his nephew appears to possess the same ability.

Only Javid Bowen has size on his side – a full 20cm taller and 10kg heavier than his uncle.

Fast and dynamic under the high ball, Bowen junior is hopeful his chance is coming.

“I’ve learnt a lot this year so I should be raring to go,” Bowen said.

“The Cowboys have given me advice here and there. To stay on top of my diet and preparation.

“When (Matt) was here I looked up to him a lot. He’s over there now but I still talk to him every now and then. I think he’s going good over there and he’s real supportive.”

Pride hooker Jason Roos says Bowen will reward the Cowboys in time.

“He’s a freak. Every week he just pulls a rabbit out of the hat,” Roos said.

“He’s unbelievable and handy to have on the edge, where he’s a constant threat. He’s good in the air, he’s quick so I think he’s got a big future.”
