Controversial Gold Coast back-rower Greg Bird hasn’t given up hope of regaining the NRL club’s captaincy.

The NSW and Australia representative was axed as Titans co-captain at the end of last year after receiving a criminal infringement notice for public urination in Byron Bay.

Bird has endured a year to forget since then, being charged with cocaine possession along with several of his teammates, and also copping an eight-week suspension that ruled him out of the State of Origin series.

The 30-year-old is fighting the cocaine charges in court and faces another date in front of a magistrate in October, but was back as captain for Monday’s 24-14 win over Parramatta.

With regular captain Nate Myles injured and vice-captain Will Zillman also sidelined, it was Bird who led the Titans out at CBUS Super Stadium.

Myles is heading to Manly next season and Bird says he would love to be given another shot at leading the Titans if it was offered to him.

“I enjoy it, a bit of extra responsibility on the football field,” Bird said.

“I love captaining the team. I love the honour, but I’m just happy to be playing football.

“Just enjoying winning. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a win as a club and hopefully these last couple of games we can start playing some football we can be proud of, start playing some football these Gold Coast fans can come out, watch us and be proud of.”
