Preview:

The Raiders had a tough road trip to start the season, facing the Cowboys in round 1 followed the Knights at Newcastle last week.

The Raiders would’ve have been disappointed not to have been able to capitalise on their good start against the Cowboys that had them leading 16 – 0 early, before a Johnathan Thurston led fight-back that saw them on the wrong end of a 28 – 22 score-line.

Against the Knights last week, the Raiders again began well but a committed home-side kept responding, keeping the game was in the balance for the majority of the match.

It was only a try in the final minute of the match to Canberra winger, Edrick Lee, his second for the season, that got the Raiders home 26 – 20.

They’ll look forward to playing in-front of their home-crowd for the first time this season on Sunday and keen to re-build their once imposing home-ground record.

The Titans had to work hard to get the better of depleted Sharks outfit in round 1 and registered a 18 – 12 before hosing the West Tigers, who were coming of twenty point loss to St. George, last week.

In hot conditions that you’d think would be to the Titan’s favour, the Tigers dominated from the opening play and raced to an early lead which they continued to build on through-out the match, winning 42 – 12 in the end.

It was a flat performance by the Titans which Coach John Cartwright described as “ugly”.

It was not what you wanted to see from a side playing in their first home match of the season and looking to start the year with back-to-back wins.

The Titans will be keen to bounce back though and have won four of the last five against the Raiders since 2011 including the two matches played in Canberra during that time.

Five-eighth Aidan Sezer and Hooker Beau Falloon have both been named in the starting line-up despite injury doubts over both.

The Titans have always proven a hard team for punters to catch and it will take a significant form reversal to turn last week’s performance around.

Canberra at home should prevail.

News:

Canberra star Shaun Fensom says he’d like to be a one-club player and even a future captain after re-signing with the Raiders until the end of the 2017 NRL season.

Although Fensom will miss the Raiders’ first home game of the season against Gold Coast this Sunday after accepting a one-week ban for a crusher tackle, the news of his re-signing is a big boost for new coach Ricky Stuart’s regime.

The two-time club player of the year has been an integral part of the Raiders since making his NRL debut in 2009.

The 25-year-old lock was rewarded for his strong work ethic, both on and off the field, earlier this year when Stuart appointed him as one of four players in the Raiders’ leadership group.

He’s also seen as a strong candidate for future skipper, having captained the Raiders’ NYC team to a premiership in 2008.

“If that does happen I’d be more than happy to take that role,” Fensom said.

While he’s aiming to finish his career as a one-club player, he accepted that wasn’t always possible.

“I’d like to. But three years is a long time and a lot can happen,” he said.

Fensom said he was disappointed not to be playing against the Titans this Sunday after his tackle on Dane Gagai during the Raiders’ 26-20 win in Newcastle resulted in a one-week ban.

“I had no intent of doing what happened in that tackle,” he said.

“So it was just a very unfortunate incident that happened and I’ve just got to take it on the chin.”
