Canberra beat Brisbane 28-12 in NRL

Brisbane’s nightmare week has continued, going down 28-12 to Canberra, as the Raiders continued their fight to make the NRL finals.

The Broncos’ latest caning follows last Monday’s diabolical 42-22 loss to Parramatta and puts the Queensland side in seventh place on the NRL table with four rounds to go, making an all important top four finish less likely.

Canberra, meanwhile, moved to 22 competition points along with a host of teams including ninth-placed Newcastle.

But the Raiders need to win their last four matches to earn a finals berth.

It was Brisbane’s fifth loss from their past seven games but the Broncos battled to the end in icy conditions in the national capital.

Brisbane centre Alex Glenn opened the scoring in the 21st minute with halfback Peter Wallace converting for a 6-0 lead.

Canberra responded six minutes later when hooker Travis Waddell planted the ball after a quick play the ball centimetres outside Brisbane’s line.

Centre Jarrod Croker failed to convert in the blustery conditions, allowing Brisbane to take a 6-4 lead into the halftime break.

The Raiders came out firing in the second half with Croker scoring his 15th try of the season in the 42nd minute off a high bomb from halfback Sam Williams.

The conversion gave Canberra a 10-6 lead and lock Shaun Fensom added his team’s third try in the 56th minute with Croker making it a 16-6 lead.

A mis-kick from Raiders fullback Josh Dugan gave the Broncos the opportunity they needed in the 65th minute and Glenn added his second try of the day.

But there was no more good news for the Broncos centre – he was carried off the field two minutes later with a suspected left hamstring injury.

Canberra’s Joe Picker was also taken from the field with a leg injury.

Dugan redeemed himself in the 74th minute when he slid under Brisbane prop Petero Civoniceva to score, with Croker adding the extra two points to seal victory for the home side.

Dugan added a second try in the 80th minute for good measure.
