Burgess joins Catalans; Carney, Taylor out

Luke Burgess, older brother of new England captain Sam, will be in Super League in 2017 after signing a two-year contract with Catalans Dragons – who have lost star Australian duo Todd Carney and Dave Taylor

Burgess spent the last six weeks of the 2016 season on a short-term contract with Salford after being released by Manly Sea Eagles.

“(Catalans) has a very talented playing squad and for much of last season looked to be on course for at least a top-four place in the Super League, at the same time playing a very attractive brand of rugby league football,” said the 29-year-old, who won two Super League titles during his four seasons with Leeds.

Burgess is the third confirmed signing for the Dragons, who earlier on Tuesday announced the departure of former Australia internationals Carney and Taylor.

Carney, 30, who had two years left on his contract, and 28-year-old Taylor, who was halfway through a two-year deal, have become part of a major clear-out by the Dragons following a dismal end to the 2016 season in which they won two of their last 13 league and cup matches.

Taylor has been offered trials by Canberra Raiders and Carney also looks set to return to the NRL.
