Broncos’ Gillett cleared to play Dragons

Brisbane star Matt Gillett will finally make his comeback from a shoulder injury for the Broncos’ crucial round 22 NRL match against St George Illawarra on Thursday night at WIN Stadium.

The Queensland back-rower has been cleared to return from the injury he suffered in State of Origin II.

Gillett passed a fitness test at the Broncos’ Red Hill base on Wednesday morning.

The 27-year-old was due to return for the struggling Broncos, who have won just two of their past nine games, against Sydney Roosters last week but was a late withdrawal.

Fellow Maroons Sam Thaiday and Josh McGuire return from suspension for Brisbane.

The Dragons will be without NSW back-rower Tyson Frizell after he copped a one-match ban at the NRL judiciary on Tuesday night for making contact with referee Chris James in last week’s loss to Canterbury.

Joel Thompson will also miss after being suspended for one match for a high tackle.

Frizell said he remained confident of the Dragons’ chances despite his unsuccessful judiciary challenge.

“One hundred per cent we can win it,” he said.

“That’s probably the biggest disappointment for myself, missing out on this week and letting the boys down.

“Hopefully we can turn our season around and get a win down at home.”
