Despite being reduced to 10 men, Britain prevailed over Australia 14-6 to win the deciding Test. The visitors were a man down from the opening minutes of the game, but still managed to lead 9-3 at halftime. By the 50th minute, Britain had lost another two men to injury, but a then unorthodox try from from Arthur ‘Chick’ Johnson, who grubbered the ball ahead to score late in the game, handed them the epic win.

With a travelling army of around 10,000 supporters cheering them on, Great Britain produced a five tries to two boilover with five-eighth Gary Schofield instrumental behind a big pack made up of players from England powershouse Wigan, whose combination around the ruck were vital.

In a dramatic opening to the 2005 World Cup, England shocked the world champions in a nail-biting victory. Australia had been weakened by the absence of Super League-aligned players, while England were without superstar winger Martin Offiah through injury. Kangaroos fullback Tim Brasher had a game to forget, with two early errors leading to England tries and a 10-6 deficit for the visitors. A try double from Steve Menzies kept Australia in the hunt. A late intercept try from English centre Paul Newlove proved the difference.

A bitter match sparked early with a brawl instigated by Australian enforcer Willie Mason ensured the match had plenty of feeling. The scores were locked at 6-all at halftime and 12-all midway through the second half before the visitors jumped clear through tries to Lee Gilmour and Gareth Raynor. Halfback Sean Long led the way for the British in their first Test win in Australia since the 1992 tour.
