Bird denies wrongdoing in pub incident

Gold Coast star Greg Bird claims video footage and witnesses will clear his name following an alleged incident at a northern NSW pub on Saturday evening.

The NRL’s integrity unit are investigating the incident, believed to have occurred after Bird’s group were refused entry during teammate Anthony Don’s bucks party in Brunswick Heads.

NSW Police have also confirmed they will speak to two men, aged 27 and 31, as part of their enquiries.

But Bird, believed to be on his last chance at the Titans, has denied any wrongdoing after the group was asked to move on.

“I left the premises(s) and someone from our party stayed and got into a physical altercation with the security,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Me along with everyone else in the group ran into (sic) separate the two involved and no-one else threw any punches.

“There is footage and witnesses to verify this.”

NSW Police will allege that the group failed to leave the venue on security’s request.

“Due to their levels of intoxication the group were asked to leave by security staff,” a police statement said.

“It will be alleged a brawl broke out between members of the group and security staff.

“The fight occurred after the group continued to remain at the premises in spite of requests for the group to leave.”

Bird, 31, captained the Titans in 2013 and 2014, but was stripped of the position after he was caught urinating beside an unmarked police car.

He was also one of seven Gold Coast players charged with, but later acquitted of possession and supply of cocaine early in 2015.
