Barba woes not a problem for Broncos

Ben Barba might not have any confidence at the moment but he can draw on plenty from his Brisbane teammates.

The Broncos’ prize recruit has made an underwhelming start to life at the NRL club.

Against Queensland rivals Gold Coast last Friday Barba’s struggles were punctuated when he made the mistake which handed the Titans a 12-8 win.

The fullback was stripped of possession in-goal by Aidan Sezer, with the Titans’ five-eighth scoring the match-winning try in the aftermath.

It left a despondent Barba to claim he wouldn’t be surprised to be dropped to Queensland Cup action if his poor form continued.

But Broncos co-captain Justin Hodges has backed the 2012 Dally M medallist, saying his teammates have no doubt Barba can recapture his best form.

“It’s just one of those patches that could happen to any good player,” Hodges said.

“He’s struggling with a bit of confidence but we support him 100 per cent. We all know what he’s capable of doing.”

The Titans loss was Hodges’ first full match since rupturing his Achilles last season.

After coming through the game with no concerns, the representative centre said he’s keen to now just focus on finding his own form ahead of this year’s State of Origin series.

“I’m going alright. It was good to get through the 80 minutes on Friday and it’s getting better each week,” Hodges said.

“Hopefully I can find some form very quickly.”
