Banned Napa eyes grand final return

Suspended Sydney Roosters prop Dylan Napa is putting his faith in his teammates to provide him with his maiden grand final berth, after the disappointment of missing last season’s decider.

The hard-hitting Queenslander was banned for two matches at the NRL judiciary on Tuesday night, after unsuccessfully pleading not guilty to a shoulder charge on South Sydney’s John Sutton in Thursday’s clash before having the grade two charge downgraded by the panel.

Napa will be available for the grand final, if the premiers win Saturday’s qualifying final against Penrith and are victorious in the preliminary final the week after.

Should the Roosters lose to Penrith and win their semi-final the following week, the Cook Islands international will be free to play in that preliminary final.

After playing in the Roosters’ qualifying and preliminary finals wins last season, Napa was edged out of grand final selection when representative star Boyd Cordner returned from an ankle injury.

Napa said he was confident his teammates would propel him to this year’s decider.

“I’m very happy with the support I have had from the club, happy with the result and hopefully I can be there for the grand final if we make it,” Napa said.

“In saying that I am disappointed (to miss two games) but the ultimate goal is the grand final, if the boys can get there.

“We are on the right track, so I will look forward to that.”

Napa accepted he would have to change his tackling technique.

“The shoulder charge is out of the game, so I definitely need it out of my game,” he said.

“I am trying to work on it each week, but there is a lot of grey areas and I just didn’t get the roll of the dice.”

Napa’s charge was the first not guilty shoulder charge plea to come before the judiciary since the tackle was controversially outlawed at the start of last season.

Roosters boss Brian Canavan said Napa’s would prove a test case.

“This now draws a line in the sand for all shoulder charges going forward for our club and everybody else playing in the game,” Canavan said.

“Being the first case it is now a significant part of building evidence for future shoulder charge cases and a lot of discussion regarding the shoulder charge.

“It wasn’t a frivolous claim by us to say not guilty, it was just that the definition had a lot of grey in relation to Dylan’s tackle.

Napa will join teammates Aidan Guerra (suspension), Jake Friend (lung), Frank-Paul Nuuausala on the sidelines for the match against Penrith.
