Will Davison on pole for Sandown 500

Ford driver Will Davison has won the second qualifying race on Saturday to claim pole position for Sunday’s Sandown 500 V8 Supercar race.

Davison flew the start of the 20-lap sprint race to jump polesitter Jamie Whincup’s Holden, and built his lead throughout at Sandown Raceway.

Finish positions for the race determine grid positions for Sunday’s 500km endurance race – the lead-up to next month’s Bathurst 1000.

Whincup finished second, with his Red Bull Racing teammate Craig Lowndes third.

Davison will team with Steve Owen for Sunday’s race.

Whincup’s co-driver Paul Dumbrell won the co-drivers’ 20-lap sprint held earlier on Saturday.

Earlier in the day Whincup broke the Sandown lap record during qualifying.

After several lap records tumbled during practice, Whincup’s 1min 8.6203sec made him the fastest ever V8 driver around the suburban Melbourne track.
