Whincup’s V8 charge continues at Surfers

Jamie Whincup’s charge to a sixth V8 Supercars title continued in relentless style with victory in Sunday’s 300km race on the Gold Coast.

The Holden ace kept his nose clean at the front of the pack in an incident-packed race on the streets of Surfers Paradise.

The victory means Whincup and co-driver Paul Dumbrell claim the Endurance Cup as the best performed pairing over the past three events.

More importantly, the Red Bull Racing star is within touching distance of an unprecedented sixth driver’s title.

He’ll head to the penultimate event of the year at Phillip Island next month with a 402-point lead in the championship standings.

Whincup only needs to be more than 300 points ahead at the end of the Phillip Island round to already have the title secure before the season finale at Homebush in December.

Starting second on the grid after Volvo’s Scott McLaughlin snared pole position, Dumbrell snatched the lead early in Sunday’s 102-lap race.

That was all Whincup needed, the 31-year-old overcoming several safety car outings to claim a dominant win.

McLaughlin came home second ahead of Nissan’s Michael Caruso with Whincup’s nearest title rival, Ford’s Mark Winterbottom, finishing a lowly 14th.

Holden’s Shane Van Gisbergen, the winner of Saturday’s race, produced the drive of the day.

The New Zealander overcame a drive-through penalty midway through the race which dumped him to 19th to finish fifth.
