Whincup takes Tasmania V8 victory

Craig Lowndes took just two turns to scrub his chances of making V8 Supercars history at Symmons Plains.

An opening lap crash from Lowndes, who was beaten from the line by David Reynolds, handed teammate Jamie Whincup victory at the Tasmanian circuit.

Starting from pole and chasing his 100th V8 Supercars race win, Lowndes made a savage miscalculation on turn two.

Beaten out of the blocks, Whincup misjudged the tight corner and hit the Ford driver, turning him around.

Stewards wasted no time in handing the five-time Bathurst winner a pit lane penalty, putting him at the back of the field.

The result left Whincup in a strategic pit-stop battle with Ford’s Chaz Mostert, won by the reigning series champion.

Shane van Gisbergen took third place, ahead of Garth Tander and Mark Winterbottom.

Lowndes recovered to be sixth, while Reynolds took 11th place.

Kiwi teenager Andre Heimgartner impressed to place 8th, his best result in his debut Supercars season.
