Whincup on pole for Gold Coast V8s

Holden star Jamie Whincup has secured pole position for the second V8 Supercars race on the Gold Coast.

Whincup, who combined with French co-driver Sebastien Bourdais to win Saturday’s race, clocked a one minute and 11.1077 seconds fastest lap in Sunday’s 30-minute qualifying session to snare pole.

The championship leader will start the 300km race on the streets of Surfers Paradise alongside championship rival Mark Winterbottom, with the Ford driver finishing second in qualifying with a 1:11.2532 lap.

“That was a little bit unexpected to be honest,” Whincup told the Seven Network.

“Thankfully the car was good enough in the second stint.”

Holden’s Jonathan Webb, who claimed second in Saturday’s truncated 79-lap race, will start from third alongside Winterbottom’s teammate Will Davison.

Craig Lowndes continues to struggle to keep his championship bid on track and will start from seventh in Sunday’s race.

The starting grid will also be missing three vehicles with Greg Ritter and Ricky Taylor, Karl Reindler and Franck Montagny as well as Tony D’Alberto and Vitantonio Liuzzi unable to compete following the damage sustained in Saturday’s crash-filled race starts.

Sunday’s race begins at 1.40pm AEST.
