Whincup looking ominous at Ipswich V8s

Jamie Whincup’s V8 Supercars championship charge has continued after a double win at Queensland Raceway on Saturday.

The Red Bull Racing driver made it six wins from his past eight starts with victory in each of the 100km sprint races in Ipswich.

It means the Holden ace is just 48 points behind championship leader Mark Winterbottom going into Sunday’s 200km event finale.

Whincup began the day by pipping Craig Lowndes in the opening 33-lap race after his teammate had started from pole position.

The pair tussled for the lead with 10 laps to go, with Whincup eventually coming out on top before pulling away to win by 4.5 seconds.

Whincup’s race-two win was more fortunate, coming after Nissan’s Michael Caruso spun young Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin as they battled for the lead.

Caruso’s bold but ultimately disastrous move scuppered McLaughlin’s race and resulted in a drive-through penalty for the perpetrator to hand Whincup the lead with just eight laps remaining.

He then again held off Lowndes for the win with Ford young gun Chaz Mostert coming in third.

Winterbottom, who had to settle for sixth in the opening race, finished sixth again in the second race as his lead was effectively halved in one day.

Sunday’s action begins with qualifying at 12.55pm (AEST) before the 200km race starts at 3.50pm.
