Whincup claims Gold Coast provisional pole

Jamie Whincup has claimed provisional pole position for the Gold Coast 600’s second and final race on Sunday.

The six-time Supercars champion clocked one minute, 10:31 seconds to be fastest ahead of Sunday’s top shootout which will decide the front of the grid for the round’s 300km finale.

Whincup was just 0.13 of a second faster than series leader and Holden teammate Shane van Gisbergen.

Whincup needs a win after van Gisbergen extended his series lead over his teammate to 160 points following Saturday’s race one victory.

Holden veteran Garth Tander was third fastest and will take part in the shootout despite having a 10-grid spot penalty hanging over him from Saturday’s spectacular incident with Ford’s Fabian Coulthard.

Tander was penalised for his role in a 265kph crash that all but wrote off Coulthard’s Falcon while tangling for fifth spot in Saturday’s opening 300km race on the treacherous street circuit.

Tander will receive his 10 spot grid penalty after the shootout.

“I had to qualify as high as he could considering the penalty,” Tander said.

“I will have a crack at the shootout, see where we end up and then take the penalty.”

Remarkably Coulthard’s DJR Team Penske outfit worked throughout the night to have his Ford ready for qualifying on Sunday morning.

Coulthard was 18th fastest for Sunday’s race.

“If you sat me down yesterday afternoon and said we would be at qualifying I would have thought you were joking,” said Coulthard, who received stirring applause from the crowd when he returned to the track.

“It’s just fine tuning right now.”

Young gun Shae Davies sparked the only red flag of the 20 minute qualifying session, writing his Holden off for the day when he hit the wall at turn 11 at more than 200kph.
