Whincup claims Bathurst lap record

Six-time series champion Jamie Whincup has stolen the show at Bathurst 1000 final practice by clocking the fastest ever V8 Supercars lap at Mount Panorama.

Whincup clocked two minutes, 04.90 seconds in the last session before Friday’s qualifying – more than half a second faster than Holden’s Fabian Coulthard’s practice effort on Thursday.

He finished ahead of Ford’s Scott Pye (2:05.24), who will partner two-time series champion Marcos Ambrose in the Great Race.

“We are just going about our job. We won’t get too carried away with practice,” Whincup told Seven Network.

“It’s a cool number though.”

Seven Network claimed Pye became the first driver to crack the 300kph barrier on the mountain, hitting a top of 304kph.

V8 Supercars are yet to confirm the speed.

Pye dipped his hat to Whincup who is hoping to turn around his season at the Bathurst 1000 after arriving at Mount Panorama in eighth place in the series.

“I am pumped but all respect to Jamie,” he said.

Qualifying starts at 1550 (AEDT).
