If he’s not chasing records, he’s breaking them.

And on Saturday, defending V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup did just that.

The Holden star racked up his 58th career pole position, the most in Australian touring car history, at Sydney Motorsport Park.

His tally surpasses the late great Peter Brock’s 57 – the last of which came at Oran Park in 1997 at the age of 52.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Whincup told the Seven Network.

“I remember early in my career I wasn’t sure whether I could get pole position – it took me two years to get one and I thought maybe pole’s not my thing.

“But I kept chipping away and learnt the art.

“I’m certainly not going to compare the past to the present, it’s pretty unfair, but I’m happy with the pole positions I’ve been able to get for myself and the team and hopefully many more to come.”

The Red Bull Racing driver couldn’t convert the front-row start into a win, finishing the weekend’s wet opening race fourth behind Holden victor Shane van Gisbergen.

He has, however, now earned more than $250,000 in pole position prizemoney since his first in 2007 – most of which he says has been spent at the bar.

“You know, at the end of the year on those team Christmas parties and whatnot,” he laughed.

“It’s certainly funded some really good fun over the last eight years, without a doubt.”

Whincup is chasing a record sixth V8 Supercars title this season.
