V8 Supercar officials have suspended the final race of the season after torrential rain again pelted Sydney Olympic Park.

A safety car was called in 41 laps into Sunday’s 74-lap feature, as cars began to slide across the street circuit and dangerously close to the concrete barriers.

Red flags were eventually waived with 29 laps remaining.

Shane van Gisbergen was leading the race at the time of suspension, ahead of fellow Holden drivers Garth Tander, James Courtney and champion-elect Jamie Whincup.

It was almost a carbon copy of Saturday’s second 125km race, which was suspended after a similarly wild storm rolled in midway through.

Racing resumed under a safety car to complete the minimum number of laps so full championship points could be awarded.
