Rosberg wins German GP for Mercedes

Nico Rosberg won the German Grand Prix for Mercedes on Sunday, his first Formula One podium finish in his home race.

Rosberg extended his world championship lead over teammate Lewis Hamilton who battled through the field from 20th to finish third behind Williams driver Valtteri Bottas.

Rosberg’s fourth win of the season, cheered on by Germany World Cup winner Lukas Podolski in the Mercedes garage, lifted him to 190 points, with Hamilton 14 points adrift.

There was drama at the start when the Williams of Felipe Massa, starting from the second row, somersaulted spectacularly.

The Brazilian’s car came to rest in the safety gravel and he walked away unscathed after the accident triggered when Kevin Magnussen’s McLaren clipped the rear of his car.

For Rosberg the result capped a memorable week in which he watched his country’s footballers win the World Cup, married his longtime girlfriend and signed a new deal with Mercedes.

He also became the first German to win his home race with a German car and engine.
