Power desperate to avoid IndyCar lottery

IndyCar driver Will Power is battling a fear of the unknown as well as his rivals as this year’s championship race heads towards a nail-biting finale.

Power holds a five-point lead in the IndyCar standings with three races remaining this season after last weekend’s event in Ohio.

The Australian hasn’t won a race since the Sao Paulo event in Brazil back in April and is eager to taste victory before the season-ending event at the Fontana circuit in California.

The last race of the season is the first IndyCar event at the two-mile (3.2km) Auto Club Speedway since 2005 and Power believes none of the championship contenders will have an edge going into the 500-mile race except for the points they can gather beforehand.

“It’s just a wide open race,” Power said.

“Total lottery – you may as well throw things up and grab one and it might be you.”

Before the trip to Fontana there are races at the Sonoma circuit in California on August 26 as well as the Grand Prix of Baltimore in September.

Sonoma is one of Power’s favourite IndyCar circuits, the Queenslander having won and held pole position there for the past two years.

Baltimore is also a road circuit, and with Power set to retain the Mario Andretti Trophy as the top road course driver in the series, those two races could be his best bet to open up a decisive championship lead.

“Sonoma’s been good for me. I enjoy street courses. So Baltimore should be good,” he said.

“At Fontana, we’ll just keep our heads down. If everything goes right, I really think we’ll be competitive.

“I think that we need to win a race here soon if we’re going to win the championship.

“We’ll do our best to do that.”
