Penalties the talk of Winton V8 meet

Just down the road from the scene of Ned Kelly’s last stand, crime and punishment was the theme of the weekend’s V8 Supercars round.

As stewards consider action for Russell Ingall’s extraordinary outburst for a mid-race penalty, Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard are licking their wounds from tough rulings from race officials at Winton.

The pair were among five drivers to cop drive-through penalties for speeding in the pit lane in Sunday’s race, all but killing their chances of winning.

While Coulthard was hoping to complete his third podium of the week, McLaughlin’s result capped off a tough meet.

He was forced to retire in race one and finished dead last in race two after being forced to pit while in the lead.

The 20-year-old then won pole in race three and was still contending for the lead when caught speeding.

“We knew this was going to be our bogey track… I don’t think I sped but rules are rules,” he said ruefully.

“I’m running through all the things in my head thinking, have I done something?”

“What’s gone on has been a bit average I think.”

McLaughlin and the podium drivers each offered a “rules are rules” style response when asked whether the drive-through penalty was too tough for such a minor infraction.

Red Bull team owner Roland Dane was seeing red over a decision to spare Tim Slade any punishment when a wheel from his pit lane rolled onto the driving zone.

Slade’s Supercheap Auto team was handed a $3000 fine and a 30 point constructors penalty for the dangerous incident.

But it was Ingall’s comments that really sparked a furore, after he suggested racing fans would “kick the s*** out of” officials for a driving penalty.

Ingall was motoring through the field with the aid of fresh tyres but was served his drive-through penalty for tapping David Wall.

What followed post-race left no room for misunderstanding.

“It’s alright for these peanuts to sit up in that ivory tower of theirs, and just hand out punishments like that,” he said.

“I’d like to drag them those guys down in front of the fans to see what they thought.”

“They’d kick the s*** out of them.”

Ingall later apologised for the remarks but Driving Standards Observer Jason Bargwanna confirmed he could still face sanction.

Such is life on the always dramatic V8 Supercars roadshow.
